The misery of depression can be utterly debilitating. Everyday, around the world, a vertitable fortune is spent on treating the condition with expensive pills and medication. Good news is available today which suggests that the best treatment for mild and moderate depression is exercise. Britain's Mental Health Foundation has launched a campaign to have the doctors prescribe a course of exercise for patients instead of a course of pills. The Foundation says that the exercise has to be supervised but that it will still be much less expensive than pills. This seems like a good project for senior sports people to organise a new national charity.

In the UK and elsewhere the taxation of income is complicated beyond description. Daily, the courts trawl over actions brought involving the tax, and by incredible defences to those claims. If you think that there are not enough policemen, nurses, doctors, plumbers or electricians when you need one...that is because they are all working as accountants, lawyers, clerks, court officials, tax inspectors, tax collectors and others in the great income tax bandwagon, which makes us all more poor than we need be. The true answer would be to scrap the tax altogether, the release of productive capacity into the economy would be so great that we would look back and wonder why we had not done it long ago. Unfortunately, taxes are controlled by politicians and the amount of political courage and intellect needed to carry this through does not yet exist. The good news is that there is a halfway house. Estonia and Poland have shewn the way by introducing a really simple form of income tax. There's no more of the allowance for this and that and allowances and credits for not having these other allowances and credits... all gone, swept away by the straightforward, honest flat rate of tax with one large personal allowance. In Poland the tax rate was reduced to a flat rate 19%. Most people found that their income tax bills fell and a whole swaithe of the population were removed from the tax altogether. The government's receipt of income from the tax did not fall. Indeed, it rose! Everyone has benefitted. In all of the countries [mostly Eastern European] which have adopted the flat tax, everyone is happier...they have truly had their cake and eaten it. With a bit of luck we may get to follow their example.

By observing the wobble of the signal from a star, scientists can infer the presence of a planet or planets surrounding it. Now however, two teams, in the US have been studying gas giants, the so-called 'Hot Jupiters'. These have been found to evolve in a similar way to our own Jupiter. Both teams decided to monitor the infra red signature of the planets as they went behind their star and then as they appeared at the side, the signal could be 'teased out' of the stars radiation. This has given the first glimpse of the alien planets. We can expect to hear much more of these alien planets in time.

Need a job? Want a highly paid one at that? Would you prefer your job to be utterly useless and unnecessary so that when you have a bad day no one notices? All of that is available in the pages of the British press jobs sections every week. In amongst the Hospital car park Senior Manager [£36000 pa] and the Out-reach co-ordinator for information for gay men, and men who like to have sex with other men but are not gay[ £28,000 pa - they deserve more] comes a real howler. Get on the phone now to Wolverhampton City Council. They urgently require a Local Area Structures and Arrangements Framework Co-ordinator. The salary range is £34,566 - £39,303 ... though, helpfully the Council have added that a pay review is due. Leaving on one side, that the successful candidate will be joining the growing army of the useless in British local and central government, this guy will cost the council tax payers and income tax payers over £40,000 a year. To that hefty sum will be added the cost of his index linked final salary pension [something no longer available to ordinary people] but which will fall on our children as a tax burden... then there's his secretary, his boss's increased responsibilities, his transport, petrol and other expenses. This job is created to meet the demand for useless targets set by central government. Nobody knows why the government has so many targets set for so many things none of which should be any of their business ... but they have. Perhaps some grown-ups will be put in charge and Britain can start to catch up with its international competition again.

It is not just mad scientists and potty professors who do research on cold fusion, so does the US government. After all, if you can create a nuclear reaction at room temperature and get more energy out than you put in, then quite literally the world's energy problems would disappear. Here is one of the ways they try to achieve this. Take electrodes made of pure palladium and plonk them into a tub of heavy water [a molecule of heavy water is made up of two deuterium atoms and one atom of oxygen unlike ordinary water which has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom]. Then they pass an electric current which it is thought allows the deuterium atoms to interact with the palladium lattice and thus overcome their resistance to fusing together. When they do so fuse, a large amount of energy is released. People who say that this almost paranormal activity is impossible should remember that the same was said about superconductors for over forty years...and then it was achieved.
Paranormal London News 2005
Reports of big black beasts in the western parts of England are usually dismissed as wild cats, labrador dogs seen at a distance or simple imaginations. Yesterday, police were called to the house of Anthony John Holder in Sydenham Park, South London at 2.15 in the morning. Mr. Holder had been awakened by the screaming of his pet cat and went to investigate. Mr. Holder told reporters, " All of a sudden I saw this big black thing pouncing at me and knocking me flying. The next thing there was this animal on my chest growling and hissing." It is believed that the animal is a large black cat, about the size of a labrador dog. The police have warned residents not to approach the animal should they see it. Mr. Holder was treated for his injuries by paramedics at his home.
UFO Mystery
On the 15th August 1977, Ohio state's Big Ear radio telescope, based in Delaware, USA, received a strange signal. It lasted for a full 37 seconds. Jerry Ehman, then of Ohio State University in Columbus, was so startled that he wrote the famous line, "WOW!" on the telescope's print out. To this day no one knows for sure what caused the signal. The mystery deepened when it was realised that the signal which was received had been broadcast on a narrow band of frequencies around 1420 megahertz, a wave band which is absolutely excluded from use on Earth by international agreement. Anyway, emissions from planets and stars usually cover a much broader range of frequencies. An investigation was set up and the debate still rages today as to the cause of the signal. Several scientists have suggested that it could have been a signal from an advanced alien world. The reason why this claim is made is that the signal came from the area of Saggitarius and the nearest star in that direction is over 220 light years away. With hundreds of sweeps of the sky failing to pick up a repeat of the signal some are saying that it was simply a one off almost paranormal event or simple interference. However this may not be so and it could still be an alien civilisation trying to contact us. The Big Ear telescope can only cover one millionth of the sky at a time and if the alien transmitter is not broadcasting then or is not directing its signal via the area searched then the chances of finding it again are less than that of winning a lottery.... but then, one day someone wins the lottery. Watch this space [no pun intended].
